- Foul Bay Rd. Project | Lennox Masonry | Victoria BC | Masonry
The skilled team of stonemasons at Lennox Masonry were responsible for designing and constructing both indoor and outdoor stone fireplace in Victoria, BC. Foul Bay Rd. Indoor & Outdoor Fireplace Project Interior This project in Oak Bay, Victoria, BC consisted of replacing the current indoor fireplace and designing/building an exterior stone fireplace. The majority of the stone used in this project was local to the property, and the remainder was quarried through K2 Stone in Victoria BC, and Hillside Stone & Garden in Duncan BC. The interior stone fireplace was built using local blast-rock, most of which was native to the property, and then chiseled to suit. The stone hearth and stone mantel were quarried and cut in Port Renfrew, BC, both of which weighed hundreds of pounds. The biggest challenge was du e to the flooring already being newly finished and the sheer weight of the slabs, which made it impossible to utilize a crane or any machinery. With sufficient flooring protection, the slabs were hand-lifted into place. Exterior The exterior fireplace was built out of a combination of stone slabs that were also quarried and cut in Port Renfrew, BC, through K2 Stone; Brownstone which is native to Utah, USA and was provided by Hillside Stone & Garden, which was used as the border to the fireplace; and a natural full-bed ledgestone that was also supplied by K2 Stone, which was used in between the slabs and the Brownstone. The shell of the fireplace was constructed out of Cinder Blocks which were then filled with concrete. In order to support the weight of the blocks and the stonework directly above the fireplace, a 1/2" thick sheet of steel was required, and then an additional 4" thick slab of concrete. - Duncan BC City Hall | Heritage Restoration | Lennox Masonry
Lennox Masonry provides heritage restoration of masonry structures in Victoria BC. We recently restored the stone and brickwork at the city hall in Duncan BC. Duncan City Hall Heritage Restoration In cooperation with the city of Duncan, BC , Lennox Masonry has now completed the heritage restoration of Duncan's City Hall. History Located at the intersection of Kenneth Street and Craig Street, Duncan, BC's city hall is one of just a few remaining heritage masonry structures native to Duncan. It was originally built in 1913 and was utilized as a Federal Building and Post Office until 1958 when the building was no longer in use. In fact, there are still bank vaults remaining on the bottom floor. Unfortunately, due to neglect, the building fell into disrepair and was set for demolition until then Mayor Ken Paskin set out to restore the structure in 1974 with the intention of converting it into a city hall. Fast forward 50 years later and the masonry components of the city hall, including the sandstone and brick, are in dire need of restoration. And this is where Lennox Masonry's story intersects with the history of a historical landmark! Vision The exterior of Duncan's City Hall consists mainly of brick and several bands of sandstone, and both receive a large amount of weathering with each passing year. When the building underwent its major renovation in 1974, the sandstone was painted over to prevent it from eroding any further. Unknown at the time was that using acrylic, latex, and plasticized paints, would only increase the erosion. Masonry needs to breathe as fully and deeply as possible in order to expel moisture and fluctuate with the seasons. Painting stone and brick to prevent further degradation only masks the underlying issues and hampers the masonry from the process of dispelling moisture from within and behind the structure. Our goal was to facilitate the mortar and the masonry's natural ability to breathe again. Approach Lennox Masonry was tasked with removing the existing paint through a very delicate and precise removal method of both blasting and steam cleaning the paint from the surface of the sandstone belts and window frames with low-air and water pressure in combination with shards of dolomite. We then began the process of repointing and restoring the masonry by mixing traditional mortars which consist of quicklime as a binder, as well as patching areas of the sandstone which had significantly eroded over the years. The third phase consisted of applying a traditional lime-wash over the sandstone components in order to help the building breathe once more. And the final phase entailed steam cleaning the sandstone base of the building with a unique, low-pressure, continuous steam machine. We utilize this machine on heritage and historical masonry buildings and structures, due to its ability to gently clean the dirt and grime from masonry and mortar joints without overly saturating and destroying the stone or brickwork. Ross Bay Cemete ry Memorial Entran ce Project In cooperation with the Old Cemeteries Society of Victoria, BC and the City of Victoria , Lennox Masonry has now completed the new entrance to the Ross Bay Cemetery located in the south Fairfield area of Victoria, BC. History The Ross Bay Cemetery was founded in 1872 when the City of Victoria purchased the land from Robert Burnaby and converted into a graveyard for the growing population of Victoria, BC. Ross Bay was originally named after Isabella Ross who was an Indigenous woman and the first female registered landowner in BC. She used her 99 acres of land to create a farm called Ross Bay Fowl Bay Farms but then began selling parcels of the acreage to individual buyers as the farm became unsuccessful. One of those parcels of land would go on to become what is now 27.5 acres of cemetery, containing over 30,000 grave sites. Vision The granite-clad pillars will also contain plaques which state the following: Ross Bay Cemetery is on the traditional territory of the Lekwungen speaking Indigenous Nations. We honour and acknowledge their dedicated stewarding of these lands for thousands of years. After the Douglas Treaties of 1850 the land was acquired by Isabella Ross and James Douglas. Ross sold part of her farm to Robert Burnaby. In 1872 he sold 13 acres of it to the City of Victoria for the cemetery which opened the following year. In 1900 part of the Douglas estate was added, on the west side, and in 1906 a part of the Ross estate was added, on the east side. The cemetery now comprises 27.5 acres and contains about 30,000 interments. It is owned by the City of Victoria, is a designated heritage site and is on the Canadian Register of Historic Places.
