  • Foul Bay Rd. Project | Lennox Masonry | Victoria BC | Masonry

The skilled team of stonemasons at Lennox Masonry were responsible for designing and constructing both indoor and outdoor stone fireplace in Victoria, BC. Foul Bay Rd. Indoor & Outdoor Fireplace Project Interior This project in Oak Bay, Victoria, BC consisted of replacing the current indoor fireplace and designing/building an exterior stone fireplace. The majority of the stone used in this project was local to the property, and the remainder was quarried through K2 Stone in Victoria BC, and Hillside Stone & Garden in Duncan BC. The interior stone fireplace was built using local blast-rock, most of which was native to the property, and then chiseled to suit. The stone hearth and stone mantel were quarried and cut in Port Renfrew, BC, both of which weighed hundreds of pounds. The biggest challenge was du e to the flooring already being newly finished and the sheer weight of the slabs, which made it impossible to utilize a crane or any machinery. With sufficient flooring protection, the slabs were hand-lifted into place. Exterior The exterior fireplace was built out of a combination of stone slabs that were also quarried and cut in Port Renfrew, BC, through K2 Stone; Brownstone which is native to Utah, USA and was provided by Hillside Stone & Garden, which was used as the border to the fireplace; and a natural full-bed ledgestone that was also supplied by K2 Stone, which was used in between the slabs and the Brownstone. The shell of the fireplace was constructed out of Cinder Blocks which were then filled with concrete. In order to support the weight of the blocks and the stonework directly above the fireplace, a 1/2" thick sheet of steel was required, and then an additional 4" thick slab of concrete. Please read our blog post on the Building of a Giant Stone Fireplace for more information.

  • Government House | Heritage Restoration | Lennox Masonry | Victoria BC

Learn about how Lennox Masonry was responsible for repointing and steam cleaning various heritage masonry walls at the Government House in Victoria, BC Government House Heritage Masonry Restoration | Victoria BC History The Government House in Victoria, BC was originally known as Cary Castle and was built in 1859. Roughly six years later it switched ownership and became the residence of the Governor of Vancouver Island. In 1871 it officially became known as the Government House and the residence of the Lieutenant Governor. During 1899 the building burnt down and the famous architects Francis Rattenbury and Samuel Maclure were tasked with designing and building a new residence on the site. The Government House then reopened in 1903. It stood for nearly 54 years before it burnt down a second time apart from the port cochère. The house was then reconstructed a third time in 1957 and reopened in 1959. Aspects of the Government House are now undergoing restorations such as the steam cleaning of the Porte Cochère and repointing of the surrounding stone walls by Lennox Masonry . Porte Cochere Restoration Lennox Masonry was tasked with steam cleaning the Porte Cochere (front entryway) in an effort to remove lichen, moss, grime, and algae that had built up on the stonework over the decades. This process entailed carefully and methodically cleaning every square inch at low pressure and high heat so as not to damage the stone or the mortar. We were also responsible for steam cleaning the Rose Garden and Herb Garden pathways in order to ensure safe passage for visitors and groundskeepers.

  • North Rd Project | Lennox Masonry | Victoria BC | Stone Walls

Learn about our North Rd. project in Victoria BC and why Lennox Masonry and their team of stone masonry experts are Victoria's most trusted masonry contractors. North Rd. Stone Retaining Walls & Patio Story This backyard transformation began with the homeowner's vision of creating an outdoor living space which would consist of a patio, garden sections, fire pit, staircases, and retaining walls. Lennox Masonry was able to deliver the intended results by building artistic stone walls and staircases, as well as a flagstone patio. The sandstone used in the construction of these walls was quarried from a private property up-island, and the granite that was implemented in the walls was quarried in Campbell River. The walls were built on concrete foundations and were backed by an additional wall of brick which was reclaimed from a 1912 chimney that we demolished along Dallas Rd. in Victoria, BC. The brick can be seen through the occasional intentional gaps placed throughout the walls.

"Sean Lennox of Lennox Masonry explained what he was doing every step of the way and completed the repointing of two chimneys on budget and to my full satisfaction. I would recommend him without reservation." — Sid T. "We hired Sean to repoint our chimney, install a new chimney pot and pour a new concrete crown. He was easy to communicate with and his team did a fantastic job. Would definitely hire again." — Ben H. Last year we purchased a home that turned out to have quite a few hidden problems. We moved in in May but didn't discover a problem with our gas fireplace until we tried to use it in October. It had so many issues that we needed to replace it. But when the fireplace installer went to run the exhaust for the new insert, he discovered that someone had removed the top of the original brick chimney and replaced it with a wooden frame. This may or may not have been to code many decades ago when the first insert was installed, but it was definitely not to code now. So suddenly, as winter was approaching, we needed to find someone to rebuild a chimney for us. I called 5 different companies, 3 of which got back to me. One of the quotes was extremely high, largely because he said he would need to deconstruct a portion of our new roof; one was basically a handwave and "I can't really quote on any surprises we might find"; and the third was Lennox. Sean's quote was clear and reasonable, he said he could likely do the work without disturbing the roof, he answered my many questions with patience and clarity, and he worked seamlessly with the fireplace installer and the roofing company. He completed the job quickly and did an excellent job of cleaning up the work site. And when the roofer was here finishing up the flashing, he said that this was the best chimney rebuild he'd seen in years -- no damage to the roof, and the only thing he needed to do was replace a small amount of flashing. Overall, we had an absolutely stellar experience with Lennox Masonry and would recommend them to anyone without hesitation. Thanks, Sean! — E. Anzalone We hired Sean and his team at Lennox Masonry to repair our old stone walls as well as repoint our chimney which was becoming a hazard. Sean was very communicative and kept us thoroughly informed from the initial consultation process through to the start of the project. Him and his team ensured that the job site was left clean and organized at the end of each day and they addressed all of our concerns. Their attention to detail when it came to matching the existing mortar was very impressive and we are more than happy with the end result. Our chimney and stone walls have never looked better! We highly recommend Lennox Masonry to anyone in Victoria, BC who needs a professional, personable, and quality driven masonry company — Faith Spencer Sean completed stone facing on our home - and did an incredible job! He added some extra touches we hadn’t thought of - that made it even more beautiful. He was great to work with - very personable, good communicator, responsive and respectful. We highly recommend him — Gayle S. We are very happy with our stone patio. Overall, Lennox Masonry was reasonably priced, trustworthy and the work was very good! — Paul Armstrong

  • Heritage Masonry Restorations | Victoria BC | Lennox Masonry

Lennox Masonry restored and rebuilt a variety of 17th Century limestone doorways and windows which are now garden features on the Oldfield Estate in Victoria, BC. Oldfield Estate 17th-Century Limestone - Gothic Ca thedral Remnants History The Norfolk Heritage Lodge, otherwise known as the Oldfield House or Oldfield Estate, is an Arts & Crafts mansion that was designed by famous architect Samuel Maclure and his assistant Ross Lort. Maclure in 1914. The home and surrounding property are considered historical due to both Maclure's architecture and the prominent Oldfield family which commissioned and inhabited the mansion for many generations. The Oldfield family, originally from Norfolk, England, choose, like many other wealthy families at the time, to settle in the Saanich Peninsula. Fast forward to 2017. While the home and property exchanged hands with many individuals, there were no major upgrades to the home until its latest set of owners purchased the property and completely renovated the mansion, as well as its separate structures. Vision Fast forward to 2017. While the home and property exchanged hands with many individuals, there were no major upgrades to the home until its latest set of owners purchased the property and completely renovated the mansion. These renovations also included taming the overgrown property and creating a sprawling garden throughout the acreage. Lennox Masonry was commissioned to restore and rebuild the remnants of a 17th-century gothic cathedral original to Italy and which were imported from France. The remnants consisted of doors, windows, and archways which were to be rebuilt in the gardens at the Oldfield Estate. Process Each architectural remnant required a solid foundation prior to being rebuilt. That entailed digging several feet beneath the surface or until we hit bedrock. The appropriate amount of aggregates would then be placed and compacted before pouring large concrete footers for the features to stand on. Due to the weight of some of the pieces involved, a forklift was required to lift and stabilize aspects of the doorways while the mortar was curing. The archways and the windows were once buttressed within their original structures, so they required custom metal fabrication and ties in order to remain upright. A unique formulation of mortar was also required for this project, so as not to overpower and weaken the limestone which these features were created from. This project took roughly 3 months to complete from start to finish and was both incredibly challenging and rewarding. • Our Story | Lennox Masonry | Victoria BC | Duncan BC | Masonry

Learn how Lennox Masonry became one of the most trusted and quality-driven masonry companies in Victoria BC when it comes to stone masonry and chimney repairs. Story Beginning Lennox Masonry began while Sean Lennox was still apprenticing under one of the most widely sought after and respected stonemasons in the Lower Mainland. Sean would take on weekend side-projects to refine his skills and inevitably learn how to run a masonry business. Being exposed to traditional stonework, stone sculpting, the restoration of heritage buildings, and a plethora of unique stonemasonry projects, prepared Sean to take his vast knowledge and expertise, and officially begin what is now Lennox Masonry Ltd. And after 14 years of apprenticing, that is precisely what he did. Sean worked by himself, designing and building brick and stone structures for over a decade before relocating to Victoria, BC . The move was inspired by a necessity to slow down and get away from the fast pace of the Lower Mainland. There was also a multitude of opportunities that were present on Vancouver Island for heritage restoration of masonry structures. Victoria, BC Years after relocating to Victoria, BC, Lennox Masonry has remained a small company with just a handful of highly skilled and competent stonemasons and bricklayers. From heritage restoration of brick and stone structures, to repairing and building stone retaining walls and brick chimneys, Lennox Masonry has established itself as a highly reputable and respected masonry company. Lennox Masonry has had the pleasure of providing masonry services on B.C. Lottery Homes for the Children's Hospital Foundation, the Cool Aid Society of Victoria, BC, as well as numerous other unique projects which can be found throughout our Projects page. We would like to thank the residents and businesses of Victoria, BC for their continued support of our small, community-oriented masonry company and for allowing us to refine and hone our craft as stonemasons and bricklayers.
