Hampshire Road Heritage Masonry Restoration |
Oak Bay, BC

Along Hampshire Road in Oak Bay, BC is a beautiful heritage home in that Lennox Masonry was pleased to complete the masonry restoration work to help preserve its character for the future generations to come. Built in 1916, the home is part of Oak Bay’s early residential growth, when many of the district’s most distinctive houses were being constructed with care, craftsmanship, and durable materials. It remains a strong example of the era, with the kind of detail and presence that helps define the historic character of the neighbourhood.

History

The home was built during a period when Oak Bay was developing into one of Greater Victoria’s most desirable residential areas. Houses from this time often reflected Arts and Crafts influence, solid masonry construction, and thoughtful proportions, and 1566 Hampshire Road fits comfortably within that tradition. The original work was contracted to Luney Bros., with Charles Elwood Watkins associated with the design, and the house’s heritage value comes not only from its age, but also from the way its original materials and architectural features contribute to the streetscape and to Oak Bay’s broader history.

Oak Bay is home to many of the most important historic residences on Vancouver Island, and work like this helps preserve that legacy. Homes such as 1566 Hampshire Road are more than private houses — they are part of the architectural and cultural fabric of the community. When masonry restoration is done well, it protects both the structure itself and the heritage story it represents.

The property also reflects Oak Bay’s broader development history. Many homes from this period were built by local contractors and tradespeople during a time of steady growth and optimism in the district. As Oak Bay matured, these early homes became an important part of its identity, and careful restoration helps ensure that their original character continues to be appreciated for years to come.

Scope of Work

Our scope of work at this Oak Bay heritage property included Doff Integra steam cleaning, repointing, and masonry repairs. The Doff system allowed us to gently clean the masonry without the harsh abrasion that can damage older surfaces or remove the natural character of the finish. On heritage homes, this low-impact approach is especially important because it helps remove dirt, staining, and biological growth while protecting the building fabric underneath.

We also completed repointing work to help restore the integrity of the mortar joints and improve the long-term durability of the masonry. On older buildings, mortar condition plays a major role in keeping water out and protecting the surrounding stone or brick. When joints begin to fail, moisture can enter and slowly cause deterioration. By carefully repointing the affected areas with materials and methods suited to a heritage structure, we helped strengthen the masonry while keeping the repairs visually in keeping with the home.

In addition to the cleaning and repointing, we carried out targeted masonry repairs where needed. Heritage restoration always requires balance. The goal is not to make an old building look new, but to stabilize, conserve, and respect what is already there. That approach was especially important on this project, where the home’s historic character and original craftsmanship needed to remain visible and intact.

Whether the work involves Doff steam cleaning, repointing, chimney repairs, stone repair, or broader heritage restoration, our focus is always on preserving the structure while respecting the building’s age and materials. Older homes require a different level of care, and we take pride in providing that attention on every project.
