Bear Mountain | Stone Retaining Walls, Stairways & Water Features

The Bear Mountain stone retaining wall project was a rewarding opportunity to create a series of masonry features that were as practical as they were visually distinctive. Working in the Bear Mountain area of Langford, Lennox Masonry constructed several tiers of large stone retaining walls, stone stairways, and water features that helped shape the property into a more usable and refined landscape. On a project of this scale, the masonry had to do more than simply hold back soil or define a grade — it needed to contribute to the overall design of the site and feel like a natural part of the environment.

A large portion of the stone used for the walls was sourced directly from the property itself, which gave the finished work a strong sense of place and continuity with the surrounding terrain. The remaining stone was locally quarried from Goldstream, BC, allowing the project to maintain a regional character while also ensuring the masonry had the quality and consistency needed for long-term performance. Using on-site and locally sourced material helped the walls blend seamlessly into their surroundings, creating a result that felt rooted in the landscape rather than imposed upon it.

The retaining walls were built with concrete caps and adequate drainage throughout the property to ensure the system would perform properly over time. Drainage is one of the most important considerations in any retaining wall project, especially in a climate like Vancouver Island’s where moisture and freeze-thaw cycles can affect durability. By addressing drainage carefully from the start, the walls were built to last while continuing to support the landscape and manage the terrain effectively.

The stone stairways and water features added another layer of craftsmanship to the project. Stairways provide structure and access, but when they are built in stone they also become an architectural feature that can define how a property is experienced. The water features introduced movement and a more natural atmosphere to the site, helping balance the solidity of the retaining walls with the softer visual quality of water and landscape. Together, these elements created a cohesive outdoor space that was both functional and inviting.
