Exterior Stone Fireplace and Patio Walls
As a practicing stonemason for nearly 20 years, I've never been all that entirely passionate about the look and feel of manufactured stone products. When it comes to cutting and shaping them, there is always the issue of hiding their exposed ends. Not to mention the limitations involved in regards to its maintenance, and the repeating characteristics that are born of its molding process. Cultured stone veneer can sometimes be a much more laborious affair, as opposed to natural stone veneer, which can increase the labor costs involved with the project at hand. And although the majority of local natural stone products are roughly the same cost as cultured stone veneers, manufactured stone veneer does have the benefit of possessing a wide variety of colours, which can make all the difference. I am well aware of how biased my opinion is in lieu of this particular project, being as I am the stonemason who applied this veneer, but I am wholly impressed with how it turned out. And so were the homeowners, as they have invited me back to re-face the front of their home, their interior fireplace, and another basement section, with this same stone veneer and style of application. The renovation consisted of removing the existing decking and guard rails, which were replaced by rough-cut cedar and stone tiles. The stone veneer was an after-thought but ended up tying it all together quite nicely. The combination of stone and wood, never seem to disappoint.
