Richmond St | Heritage Chimney Rebuild - 1921

The Richmond St. project in Victoria was a heritage chimney rebuild carried out on a chimney that had reached the point where repair alone was no longer enough. Over the course of its long life, the original chimney had deteriorated to the point that the bricks could no longer be salvaged in a responsible way, so the decision was made to remove the existing structure and rebuild it from the ground up. On a heritage home like this, that kind of work requires not only masonry skill, but also a careful understanding of how to preserve the overall character of the building while bringing the chimney up to current standards.

History

This heritage-designated chimney rebuild is located on Richmond St. in Victoria, BC. The chimney had fallen into disrepair over its 112 year lifespan and the bricks were becoming too decrepit to salvage, unfortunately. Lennox Masonry was commissioned to remove the chimney, pour a new concrete footer, and rebuild it from the ground up, to meet code requirements in the city of Victoria, BC.

Before any demolition began, the necessary permits were obtained through the City of Victoria, and extensive scaffolding was installed so the top of the chimney could be accessed safely and properly. Once the chimney was taken down, a new concrete footer was poured to provide a stable foundation for the rebuilt structure. That foundational work is critical on a project like this because a chimney is only as strong as the base it sits on, and older chimneys often fail from the bottom up as much as from visible wear above.

Chimney Rebuild

The rebuild itself was carried out with a focus on both durability and appearance. The new chimney features decorative brick bands, a concrete crown, and a chimney pot, all of which help protect the structure from the elements while giving it a finished appearance that suits the home. These details matter because a heritage chimney should not only function properly, but also look like a natural part of the building rather than a modern replacement added without regard for the original architecture.

As part of the project, Lennox Masonry also coordinated with other trades to install a gas insert for the homeowners and to obtain WETT certification. That kind of coordination is often an important part of chimney restoration work, especially when the fireplace system is being updated at the same time as the masonry. By handling the rebuild in a complete and organized way, the project delivered both structural reliability and a practical finished result for the homeowners.

This Richmond St. chimney rebuild is a strong example of the kind of work required when a heritage chimney has deteriorated beyond repair. Rather than simply patching over the damage, the project was approached as a full restoration and reconstruction effort, with careful attention to code requirements, structural stability, and architectural character. For homeowners in Victoria and throughout Vancouver Island looking for expert chimney rebuilds, heritage chimney repair, or masonry restoration, this project shows the level of detail and craftsmanship Lennox Masonry brings to every job.
