North Road | Stone Retaining Walls & Patio
The North Road project is a standout example of how custom masonry can turn a backyard into a complete outdoor living environment. The homeowner wanted a space that included a patio, garden sections, a fire pit, staircases, and retaining walls, and Lennox Masonry brought that vision to life with artistic stonework and carefully planned site design. The finished result is a landscape that feels both functional and handcrafted, with each element contributing to the overall flow of the property.
This project is especially notable for the use of multiple stone types and the way the materials were integrated into the design. Sandstone quarried from a private property up-island, granite quarried in Campbell River, and reclaimed brick from a 1912 chimney all played a role in creating a retaining wall system that feels rich in texture, history, and character. It is the kind of project that shows how masonry can connect the practical and the beautiful in a very lasting way.

Story
The North Road project in Saanich, BC began with a clear and ambitious vision for a backyard that would serve as a complete outdoor living space. Rather than focusing on a single feature, the design called for a combination of patio areas, garden sections, a fire pit, staircases, and retaining walls. To make that possible, the work had to be approached as a unified landscape project where each masonry element would support the others visually and functionally.
Lennox Masonry built the retaining walls and staircases with a focus on durability, proportion, and visual rhythm. The walls were constructed on concrete foundations, ensuring that the structures would remain stable over time while supporting the changes in grade across the site. That kind of structural preparation is essential for retaining walls, especially when they are part of a larger outdoor living space that will be used regularly.
What makes this project especially distinctive is the material story behind it. The sandstone was quarried from a private property up-island, while the granite came from Campbell River, giving the walls a strong regional character. In addition, the walls were backed by brick reclaimed from a 1912 chimney demolished on Dallas Road in Victoria. Those reclaimed pieces can be seen through intentional gaps in the stonework, adding both texture and a meaningful historical layer to the project.
The result is a retaining wall system that feels artistic, durable, and deeply connected to local materials. Rather than appearing purely utilitarian, the walls become part of the architecture of the landscape, helping define the property while adding interest, movement, and a sense of craftsmanship that elevates the entire outdoor space.

Completion
The North Road project is a strong example of how retaining walls can be far more than structural necessities. With sandstone, granite, and reclaimed brick brought together in a thoughtful design, the finished work gives the property a unique and enduring sense of character.
