Explore Unique Masonry Projects Completed by Lennox Masonry in Victoria, BC Are you a homeowner located in Victoria, BC and interested in renovating the interior or exterior of your home with a reputable and professional masonry company? From maintenance and repairs to transforming your living space, let’s take a look at some of the masonry projects we’ve completed here at Lennox Masonry and how we can help give your home and property a new look! Maintenance & Repairs: Chimney Repointing and Rebuilding: Victoria, BC is home to thousands of homes which still utilize brick and stone chimneys, most of which are in disrepair for one reason or another. The first line of defense for these chimneys is what masonry contractors refer to as the crown, or top of the chimney. Chimney crowns are subject to our wet climate here on Vancouver Island and that weather tends to work itself between the flue liners and the mortar or concrete at the top of the chimney. That water and moisture then remains trapped, freezes and expands through the seasons and then contracts, leading to a separation between the mortar and brick or stonework. When that occurs, it’s imperative to build a new concrete crown or cap and repoint the chimney. What is repointing? Repointing is the process of removing a certain amount of the current mortar from between the bricks or stones that make up a wall or chimney and replacing it fresh mortar. For a detailed overview of the repointing process, check out our blog post here. If you're interested in receiving an assessment and consultation from Lennox Masonry for your chimney, please click here! What does replacing a concrete crown entail? Replacing a cap or crown of a chimney entails removing the current crown, potentially replacing the flue liners, and then forming and pouring a new concrete cap in place that aligns with the building codes and requirements dictated by both the City of Victoria and Canadian chimney building codes. Stone & Brick Retaining Walls: Stone and brick retaining walls in Victoria, BC are also subject to not only our rainy seasons but also additional sources such as sprinklers and irrigation. The leading cause of failure for these masonry structures is a lack of drainage which leads to the same issues that chimneys also suffer from. These walls will either need repointing or to be rebuilt with drainage in mind. For more information on repointing and repairing stone and brick retaining walls, please read this blog post here. Renovating Your Home and Property with Stone and Brick: Thin Stone Veneer and Thin Brick Veneer: One of the easiest and most cost-effective ways of modernizing your home is by applying thin stone or brick veneer to a feature wall, fireplace, or the exterior of your home. Application methods and costs vary based on what surface thin veneers are being attached to as well as the style of stone or brickwork. To read more about what Lennox Masonry can do for you and your home by applying thin brick or stone veneer, please visit our stone veneer page. Fireplaces: Fireplaces are typically the main gathering and focal point of any home. Renovating fireplaces can be as simple as re-facing the current brick or stone with a stone/brick veneer or it may be much more involved if a firebox/fireplace expansion is desired. To see what Lennox Masonry can do with your next fireplace renovation, please check out our fireplace page. Outdoor Living Spaces: Outdoor living spaces can be readily achieved and transformed by flagstone patios, outdoor stone fireplaces, water features, and stone walls for retaining gardens. - Creating Your Ideal Outdoor Living Space in Victoria, BC
Combining functionality and aesthetics: Building flagstone patios and stone walkways with Lennox Masonry in Victoria, BC Victoria, BC is not only home to one of the mildest climates in Canada but it is also home to picturesque landscapes littered with natural stone outcrops along the coastline and sprawling views of the Olympic Mountain Range. Those two qualities alone make Victoria an ideal environment for both stonemasons and homeowners alike. Out of all the projects we work on each year here at Lennox Masonry, building outdoor living spaces out of stone is what we are known for. If you’re like many other homeowners in Victoria, BC that are looking to extend your living area, one of the best ways to enhance your outdoor space is by incorporating flagstone, a versatile and durable material that adds functionality and natural beauty to any landscape. Let's explore how Lennox Masonry can help you create a beautiful flagstone patio or walkway that will stand the test of time in Victoria's unique environment. Why Choose Flagstone? Flagstone is an excellent choice for outdoor spaces in Victoria for several reasons: Durability: Flagstone can withstand Victoria's varied weather conditions, from rainy winters to dry summers. And due to its coarse nature, it is a relatively non-slip surface. Natural beauty: Vancouver Island has several stone quarries which produce unique, local flagstones out of indigenous rock that compliment and match the colours and textures naturally occurring in stone outcrops found throughout Victoria. Versatility: Flagstone is best used for patios, walkways, and garden paths where a level surface is desired. Designing Your Flagstone Space When planning your outdoor living area, consider the following: Layout: Designing a space that flows naturally with your existing landscape and home is easily accomplished with the addition of flagstone. Pattern: Flagstones come in two main styles: random and tumbled. Random flagstones are inconsistent when it comes to their edges, shapes, and sizes. Whereas tumbled flagstones have a much greater degree of uniformity to them. Colour: Locally quarried flagstones on Vancouver Island are rich with grey, blue, and brown colours with hints of quartz and iron throughout. However, most stone distributors also import flagstones from all over North America, providing you with plenty of choices when it comes to accenting or complimenting the colours present on your home and surrounding property. Installation Process Here's a brief overview of how Lennox Masonry typically installs a flagstone patio or walkway in Victoria: Layout: First we determine what type of functionality and design is required. Based on that, we will recommend a certain thickness of flagstone to suit those needs. If it’s a patio, we typically pour concrete and use a thinner flagstone. If it’s a garden pathway, we will typically use a thicker flagstone which doesn’t require a concrete foundation. Excavation: We start by digging about 6"-7" deep to create a solid foundation for the flagstone. Base preparation: We then lay a sturdy compacted base of compacted gravel and sand, better known as road base. Concrete: When it comes to flagstone patios for entertaining, it is crucial to use concrete as a secondary base to ensure no movement in the flagstones and for drainage purposes. Stone selection: The fun part! You get to choose which style and type of flagstone you would prefer for your new outdoor living space. Placement: Based on the design preferences, Lennox Masonry and our team of skilled stonemasons will either cut and chisel the stones to meet perfectly or keep them natural while maintaining a level and cohesive surface. Filling gaps: Depending on the application, we will then either introduce mortar or another aggregate to fill the spaces between stones. Enhancing Your Flagstone Space To create a truly inviting outdoor living area: Add comfortable seating and outdoor furniture to make the space functional. Incorporate landscaping elements like plants and shrubs to soften the hardscape. Consider adding features like a fire pit or outdoor lighting for ambiance. Install a pergola or awning for shade and protection from the elements. Maintenance Tips To keep your flagstone patio or walkway looking beautiful for years to come: Regularly sweep and rinse the surface to remove debris. Let Lennox Masonry apply a high-quality sealant to protect the stone from stains and to bring out the natural colours within the flagstone itself. Whether you're hosting summer barbecues or enjoying a quiet morning coffee, let Lennox Masonry build you a new flagstone patio or walkway to provide a beautiful and durable foundation for your new outdoor living space in Victoria, BC today! - Backyard Flagstone Renovation Project in Victoria, BC
Renovating Your Backyard Using Flagstone In Victoria, BC With Lennox Masonry Flagstone has always been and likely will remain one of the best options for creating beautiful outdoor living spaces, walkways, and garden paths. Here at Lennox Masonry, we use flagstone dozens of times each year for outdoor hardscaping projects and the end-result is always spectacular. Luckily, here on Vancouver Island, we have access to several stone quarries which produce unique looking flagstones that fit right in with the natural occurring stone outcrop present throughout the island. For this particular outdoor renovation project in Victoria, BC, we decided to use a San Juan Flagstone which is a mixture of grey and blue colours with a hint of quartz which is a signature of the stone here on Vancouver Island. This flagstone comes in varying thicknesses between 3/8ths of an inch to 3 inches. When it comes to handling these flagstones, given their large footprint, I recommend that when working with any thickness of 1.5” and beyond that a skid steer be utilized to transport them across the job site, or, at the very least, a stone dolly. Unfortunately, due to the tight working space on this project, we had access to neither and some brute strength was all that would suffice. Needless to say, our backs needed a long break afterwards! The ultimate vision for this masonry job was to extend the outdoor living space while maintaining a balance between function and aesthetics. After laying down string lines and mapping the backyard, we proceeded to pour a 6” concrete slab as a foundation for the flagstone. Once the concrete had fully cured, we then began laying down our 2-3” thick flagstones in such a way that the pieces aligned as best as possible. Once they were all in place, we then cut each one down to ensure that they would fit as tightly as possible while also maintaining enough space for mortar joints. Once the edges had been completed, we decided to create a unique stone feature out of river rocks and emulate patterns found in nature, such as the flow of a river and tree’s roots. For this design, we utilized local river rocks of various sizes and stood them upright, ensuring that they wouldn’t stick up too far beyond the level of the flagstone. The end-result was a beautiful, unique patio rich with colours, depth, and character.
